Petfinder.com
Petfinder is a great tool, and very easy to use.  Just select the type of animal you're looking for, enter the breed and your zip code, and click GO.  Next, if you want to refine your search, a sidebar will appear on the left where you can specify age, gender, and even whether the animal is house trained.  You can also specify if you are looking for a pet that likes to be around other animals and children.  Your results will allow you to browse animals that match your criteria in different locations, without leaving your desk.

Find A Breed-Specific Dog Rescue in 5 Steps
Step 1: Type in the breed you are looking for, the word "rescue", and a keyword or two to denote your location.  I searched for a Golden Retriever rescue in Southern California.

Step 2: You will likely find several hits that match what you're looking for.  Many will have online listings of the animals they have for adoption.

Step 3:  My first result was Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue.

Step 4: Clicking the "View Our Goldens" link takes you to a list of adoptable animals with photos, and a brief profile on each dog.

Step 5:  Clicking on Mindy's profile will take you to more detailed information and photos.  The detailed description was written with information from her foster family, and tells you about Mindy's personality.  It also says that she is one year old, house trained, and knows how to sit and shake hands.
