Pet City Supplier: Brandi Cheney

Pet City's website states: "All our puppies come from personally known, licensed breeders."

One Pet City supplier, Brandi Cheney, is currently being sued by dog owners who claim she sold them sick puppies raised in poor living conditions.  One puppy developed seizures shortly after purchase, and another died of a debilitating virus.

Pet City provided us with the license numbers of some of their "breeders", which confirms that several of these facilities are on HSUS's list of the worst puppy mills in the country. Inspectors found underweight and injured dogs; rusted mesh flooring in cages that allowed puppies' feet to slip through the wire; and cattle medication being administered to dogs.

"I realize I'm not going to change people's minds who don't like dogs in cages, but I don't know any other way," she said. "That's got to be done if someone is going to breed more than just a couple dogs."

Brandi Cheney has over 120 dogs on her property, and has 500 pages of USDA violations against her.

     Brandi Cheney owns breeding facilities under several different names with her mother, Diana Stephenson.  Recent investigations found the duo selling puppies over the Internet using vague names and locations.

• Over 500 pages of recent federal enforcement records.
• Dogs with oozing and encrusted eyes, and bleeding lacerations.
• Shivering animals in outdoor enclosures during 0-35 degree temperatures, without bedding or weather protection.
• All outdoor enclosures and many shelter buildings were so covered with feces that dogs could not avoid walking in it.
• Dogs so badly matted with feces encrusted hair that it was difficult to determine what gender or breed they were.
• Body of an emaciated female boxer outside of an enclosure, covered with a feed sack.

PET CITY'S SUPPORT OF PUPPY MILLS UNDER PROTEST

TORRANCE, CA - Local grassroots animal rights groups will be spending this Sunday afternoon protesting Pet City in Torrance, outraged over their support of Missouri puppy mills.  Activists will assemble at 2:00 PM in front of Pet City at 18305 Hawthorne Blvd., Torrance.

According to reports from The Humane Society of the United States and the USDA as compared to information directly provided by Pet City, the chain of four local pet stores is currently doing business with some of the worst puppy mills in the country.  Conditions at these facilities include exposure to extreme heat and cold, flea and rat infestations, emaciated animals, and dogs with bleeding wounds and missing eyes.

Activists urge Pet City to stop supporting puppy mills, and instead work with local rescues and shelters to set up an adoption program.  Due to budget cuts, Los Angeles shelters could see an additional 11,000 pets euthanized in the coming year, as well as more animals on the streets.  According to the Humane Society, 6-8 million animals enter shelters each year, and half of those are euthanized.

One local activist says, “As a long time resident of Torrance I am disgusted to find out that Pet City sells dogs from puppy mills.  Living in a household full of animal lovers, I have always known the cruel and inhumane treatment that dogs endure inside of commercial breeding facilities. The breeding dog spends her entire life in a tiny wire cage, being denied everything that is natural to her, while her puppies are sold at a cheap price to stores like Pet City.  A store like this has no place in our community, and as a responsible resident I plan to see Pet City either go humane or close down.”
